Malaria is high risk in Burundi

Since 2015, malaria has been a major public health problem in Burundi. In the last 3 years, more than 19.7 million cases and over 9,000 deaths have been registered. The districts that account for 20% of all cases and 19% of all deaths include: Gitega, Kirundo, Nyabikere, Buhiga, and Kibuye.

Advice

All travellers to any region where malaria transmission is occurring can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Anti-malaria medication is recommended.
