Malaria outbreak in La Guajira, Colombia may be spreading

Health authorities in the state of Zulia have reported 139 cases of malaria, of which 138 acquired their infection in the Colombian Guajira region across the border from Zulia. The Colombian government appears not to have declared an official alert. These patients probably indicate that the outbreak in Colombia is more severe than previously known and may be spreading.

Travellers in this region of Colombia should be aware of the risk of exposure to malaria and take all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Anti-malaria medication is recommended.
