Malaria surges in Ahmedabad, India

In the municipality of Ahmedabad, cases of the less serious form of malaria (caused by the vivax strain) increased by 303 cases in one week to total 1,132 for the month so far. On a more serious note, the cases due to the falciparum strain increased by 70 to reach a total of 200 cases this month.

Advice For Travellers

The falciparum strain of malaria can cause a much more serious illness, including often fatal cerebral (brain) malaria. Any traveller to any region where malaria transmission is occurring can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Anti-malaria medication is recommended.
