Malaria (warning) - new drug resistant strains of malaria now found in East Africa

The same strain of malaria found along the Thai-Burmese border that is resistant to the best drug against the disease (artemisinin) has now been found in East Africa as well. The patients who were studied were infected by malaria parasite-carrying mosquitoes while travelling to East Africa and the other 9 sub-Saharan African countries.

Although only a few patients were studied, this finding of newly artemisinin resistant strains of malaria makes it even more critical that travellers to this region reduce their risk of exposure to malaria by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Anti-malaria medication is still recommended.
