Marked increases in dengue fever cases in Venezuela

Reports of dengue fever have increased to around at least 1,000 cases every week. Since the beginning of this year, there have been 10,314 reported cases. Of these, 404 have had the more severe form called dengue haemorrhagic fever. There have been 10 deaths registered so far. Some of the most affected areas include Mérida, Zulia, Lara, Trujillo and Aragua.

There may be many more unreported cases since counting andreporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and manypersons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas wherethe dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to denguefever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
