Massive dengue fever epidemic in Paraguay appears to be easing

This year, from January to May, more than 140,000 cases of dengue fever were reported. There were 80 deaths due to this infection. At the height of the epidemic, about 1,500 patients were visiting hospitals each day. That number has decreased to an average of 120. Although the worst of the epidemic may be over, the dengue fever virus is still active in this country most of the year.

There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
