Massive epidemic of chikungunya fever continues in the Americas in 2015

The following countries (states or departments) are reporting cases of chikungunya fever acquired from locally infected mosquitoes:

Mexico:

  • Oaxaca state
  • Quintana Roo state

Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua

Brazil:

  • Alagoas state
  • Bahia state
  • Mato Grosso do Sul state

Colombia:

  • Cordoba department

Ecuador, French Guiana

There is no end in sight for the epidemic of this infection. Travellers to areas where chikungunya fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to this virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with chikungunya fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported. Chikungunya virus infections may have long lasting health consequences.
