Massive security in place for Egypt referendum January 14-15, 2014

January 14 and 15 are voting days for Egyptians to approve a new constitution. The government has warned that disruptions to the voting process will be met with “strength never seen.” About 350,000 police and army personnel, special forces, paratroopers, armoured vehicles and helicopters have, and are currently being, deployed to streets across Egypt to secure the polls and encourage a high turnout. Three people were killed in clashes yesterday in protests. Today there have been clashes in the city of Sohag. Travellers should avoid any gathering during the referendum vote.
