Measles cases and outbreaks in Egypt and South Africa

Measles cases and outbreaks are being reported in the following countries:

  • Egypt - new case reported in Beni Suef province; previously, cases only reported from Marsa Matrouh province. Most of these cases were identified from Siwa Oasis.
  • South Africa - the National Institute for Communicable Diseases reports that measles has spread from the provinces of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Northern Cape and Western Cape to 2 more provinces, Eastern Cape and Free State.

Outbreaks of measles can occur frequently anywhere in the world at any time. Unvaccinated travellers often spread the disease when they return to their countries. Travellers can reduce their risk of exposure to measles virus by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including measles, are up-to-date prior to travelling.
