Measles deaths in Europe

Through the end of April, there have been 25 deaths due to measles as a result of the increases in measles cases across many countries in Europe. Romania has grappled with increased numbers of infected persons since last year, and 22 of the reported deaths have occurred in this country. The other deaths were recorded in Portugal, Bulgaria and Switzerland.

All travellers are reminded that outbreaks of the highly contagious measles virus can occur anywhere in the world at any time. Travellers who have not been immunized may be at high risk. Travellers can reduce their risk of exposure to the highly contagious measles virus by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including measles, are up-to-date prior to travelling.
