Measles outbreak in Romania continues

The total number of people infected with measles has increased to almost 7,300 cases. Thirty deaths (mostly children) have been confirmed in multiple counties. The most affected counties include Timis, Arad, Caras Severin, Bihor, Cluj, Calarasi, Satu Mare, Vaslui, Galati, Mures and Bucharest. A shortage of measles vaccine is hampering control efforts.

Advice

All travellers are reminded that outbreaks of the highly contagious measles virus can occur anywhere in the world at any time. Travellers who have not been immunized may be at high risk. Travellers can reduce their risk of exposure to the highly contagious measles virus by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including measles, are up-to-date prior to travelling.
