Measles outbreaks feared in Ukraine in 2017

Last year, cases of measles were reported in 8 oblasts of the country: Kirovohrad Oblast, Cherkasy Oblast, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Zakarpattia Oblast, Chernivtsi Oblast, Lviv Oblast, Odessa Oblast, and Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. Measles vaccination coverage is as low as 45%, compared to the 95% recommended by the World Health Organization. Authorities are concerned there will be outbreaks in 2017.

Advice For Travellers

All travellers are reminded that outbreaks of the highly contagious measles virus can occur anywhere in the world at any time. Travellers who have not been immunized may be at high risk. Travellers can reduce their risk of exposure to the highly contagious measles virus by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including measles, are up-to-date prior to travelling.
