Meningitis hits Burkina Faso

Health officials have reported 63 cases of meningitis with 5 deaths during the first 10 days of January. The location of the infected people is not reported.

Advice For Travellers

The risk for the average traveller is not high, without knowing where the outbreak is occurring. However, the risk can be minimized by obtaining a vaccination against meningitis prior to travelling to African countries in the sub-Saharan meningitis belt, e.g., the Gambia, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, Central African Republic, Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, during the dry season (December to June).
