Meningitis in Central African Republic

Cases of pneumococcal meningitis have recently been reported in the Paoua and Bossangoa sub-prefectures. Slightly more than 200 cases and 19 deaths have been reported this past month.

Advice For Travellers

Travellers to African countries in the sub-Saharan meningitis belt,for example, The Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, Central African Republic, Côte d'Ivoire, South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Togo, and Eritrea, during the dry season (December to June) can reduce the risk of exposure to meningitis by obtaining a vaccination against pneumococcus bacteria prior to travelling in these countries.
