Meningitis outbreak reported in South Sudan

Health officials have reported 24 suspected cases of meningitis that could represent the beginning of an epidemic throughout the country. Most of the cases where located in the capital of Juba.

Travellers to South Sudan and other African countries in the sub-Saharan meningitis belt, e.g., The Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, Central African Republic, Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Eritrea, during the dry season (December to June) can reduce the risk of exposure to meningitis by obtaining a vaccination against meningitis prior to travelling in these countries.
