Meningitis outbreak spreads in Ghana

Since an outbreak of meningitis in Ghana was reported 2 weeks ago, the number of infected people has grown from 30 to 55. Deaths have increased from 8 to 19 or more. The most affected districts include Tain, Wenchi, Techiman and Bruohan in the Brong Ahafo Region.

Advice For Travellers

The risk for the average traveller is not high. However, the risk can be minimized by obtaining a vaccination against meningitis prior to travelling to African countries in the sub-Saharan meningitis belt, e.g., the Gambia, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, Central African Republic, Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, during the dry season (December to June).
