Meningitis risk in sub-Saharan meningitis belt

So far in 2016, 15 districts in Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Nigeria and Togo have reached epidemic levels of infection. Alerts have been posted for districts in Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Niger, and Chad. Other countries in the meningitis belt, such as Cameroon, Senegal, Ivory Coast, and Mali, have reported sporadic cases.

Advice For Travellers

Travellers to African countries in the sub-Saharan meningitis belt, e.g.,The Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, Central African Republic, Côte d'Ivoire, South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Togo, and Eritrea, during the dry season (December to June) can reduce the risk of exposure to meningitis by obtaining a vaccination against meningitis prior to travelling in these countries.
