Meningitis vaccination campaign initiated in Santiago, Chile

The limited circulation of a particular strain of meningitis bacteria (W-135) in Santiago, Chile, has resulted in at least 45 cases and 10 deaths. The Ministry of Health is implementing a large scale vaccination effort for children between the ages of 9 months to 5 years who represent the most vulnerable group. Since the risk of exposure for travellers is low, there is no need for vaccination against meningitis prior to travelling to Chile.
