Mexico and countries in Central America are reporting large numbers of dengue fever cases

The following countries are reporting a large number of dengue fever cases this year:

  • Costa Rica - 4,240 cases
  • El Salvador - more than 35,200 suspected and confirmed cases with 1 death.
  • Guatemala - approximately 12,700 suspected and confirmed cases with 5 deaths
  • Honduras - almost 38,000 cases
  • Mexico - approximately 138,600 suspected and confirmed cases with 15 deaths
  • Nicaragua - approximately 27,000 suspected and confirmed cases with 4 deaths
  • Panama - approximately 2,400 suspected and confirmed cases with 1 death

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
