Monkeypox outbreak in Central African Republic

Two deaths due to monkeypox infection have been reported in the Mbomou prefecture. An unknown number of contacts of these cases are in quarantine.

Advice For Travellers

Monkeypox is a virus that is closely related to the smallpox virus, the virus used in the smallpox vaccine, and the cowpox virus. Infection with monkeypox is not as serious as smallpox, although some deaths occur. Travellers are at very low risk provided they wash hands regularly, avoid any manipulation of sick or dead animals and avoid the secretions of infected person and objects.
