More cases of bird flu (H7N9) in Guangdong Province, China

Authorities in Guangdong Province have reported a surge in cases of the avian flu strain H7N9. A total of 49 additional human
cases were diagnosed in the past 6 weeks. The total number of cases of this strain of bird flu has reached 555 since the virus was first discovered several years ago. Sporadic cases have been reported from many provinces but there are still no signs that this virus is transmitted easily from person to person. Nevertheless, travellers should be cautious and avoid visiting live poultry markets where various strains of bird flu may be found.
