More cases of encephalitis (brain inflammation) in Gorakhpur, India

A total of 693 children suffering from encephalitis were admitted to the Baba Raghav Das Medical College in Gorakhpur. Of these, 147 have died. The affected areas include the districts of Gorakhpur, Deoria, Gonda, Basti, Sidharth Nagar, Sankabrinagar, Kushinagar, Balrampur, Ghazipur, Azamgarh. Although Japanese encephalitis virus occurs in these areas, some of the cases may be caused by other viruses or environmental factors.

Advice For Travellers

Outbreaks of encephalitis occur regularly in north eastern India, where these cases occurred. Japanese encephalitis virus is responsible for some, but not all cases. Until all the causes for these repeated outbreaks have been discovered, travellers in these areas can minimize any exposure to the Japanese encephalitis virus by obtaining a vaccination against this virus.
