More cases of previously unknown strain of polio virus in Balochista, Pakistan, causes concern

The reports of 10 cases of a new hitherto unknown strain of polio virus in Qilla Abdullah and Pishin in Balochistan has caused some concern. The Balochistan government has been asked to launch an anti-polio campaign in the province within 30 days. People in this region are often influenced by extremist groups that resist vaccination of children. Travellers in any country that reports cases of polio can reduce their risk of exposure to polio virus by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including polio, are up-to-date prior to travelling.
