More cases of Zika virus in Alagoas, Brazil

Nine more cases of Zika virus infections in Alagoas this week bring the total number of reported cases to 13. However, these cases are in many different localities (Arapiraca, Maceio, Maribondo, Colonia Leopoldina and Mata Grande). The wide geographic area suggests that there may be many more cases in other places that have not sought medical care and been reported since the disease is often mild.

Advice For Travellers

Since infection with this virus results in a rather mild flu-like illness, there may be many cases in the community that do not seek medical attention and are not reported to health authorities. Travellers can avoid the inconvenience of this untreatable illness by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
