More chikungunya in Caribbean

Cuba is reporting an outbreak in the city of Holguin, although no numbers of cases are reported. Puerto Rico continues to report cases with a total of approximately 700 suspected and confirmed cases. In addition, French Guiana is reporting over 8,000 suspected and confirmed cases. No recent reports have been received from the English speaking Caribbean Islands.

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where chikungunya fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to this virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with chikungunya fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported. Chikungunya virus infections may have long lasting health consequences.
