More chikungunya in Mexico and Honduras

Mexico:

  • National - 3,306 cases reported by 16 of Mexico’s 32 states, including Campeche, Coahuila, Colima, Chiapas, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Mexico, Michoacan, Morelos, Nayarit, Nuevo Leon, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and Yucatan. However, the state of Guerrero is reporting almost 18,500 suspected cases of this infection.

Honduras:

  • National - 60,741 cases.

Advice

All travellers to areas where chikungunya fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to this virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with chikungunya fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported. Chikungunya virus infections may have long lasting health consequences.
