More deaths due to acute encephalitis in Uttar Pradesh, India

In the past few days, 15 more children have died from acute viral encephalitis in Uttar Pradesh. The total for the year so far has reached 358 cases, most of whom have been between the ages of 6 months and 15 years of age. More than 200 patients are still hospitalized. In the past, the majority of deaths were caused by Japanese encephalitis, but in the past 7 years, children have been dying of other viruses that cause encephalitis. Not all the causes have been identified. Travellers to this area should consider vaccination against Japanese encephalitis virus since some of the cases are caused by this virus. Adherence to strict water and food precautions will help prevent some of the enteroviruses that are responsible for some of the cases.
