More dengue deaths in Dominican Republic

Of the slightly more than 5,000 suspected and confirmed cases of dengue fever reported so far this year, 53 people have died from this infection. Many of the cases have been registered in the capital city Santo Domingo and in tourist destinations such as Puerto Plata and La Altagracia in Punta Cana.

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
