More measles reported in January than for entire year 2014 in USA

During the month of January, a total of 84 measles cases were reported by 14 states. This number is more than the entire total reported for all of 2014. A large part of the problem is due to the multi-state measles outbreak that originated in two Disney theme parks in California in December.

Outbreaks of measles can occur frequently anywhere in the world at any time. Unvaccinated travellers often spread the disease when they return to their countries. Travellers can reduce their risk of exposure to measles virus by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including measles, are up-to-date prior to travelling.
