Advice For Travellers

Not all the people diagnosed with encephalitis (brain inflammation) have Japanese encephalitis, and laboratory tests are not always available to distinguish different causes of this condition. Given the lack of specific data to estimate the risk of exposure, all travellers to areas where this virus might be circulating can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Vaccination against Japanese encephalitis is recommended for travellers visiting rural areas or engaging in agricultural activities such as rice cultivation.
