More sectarian violence in North Caucasus area of Russia

Gunmen have killed an Islamic cleric in the mainly Christian Russian republic of North Ossetia. This attack suggests militant Islamic violence in Russia's southern Muslim provinces may be spreading to nearby regions. Shootings and bombings are frequent events across much of Russia's North Caucasus, but violence in North Ossetia is unusual. The killing is the at least the sixth this year of a Muslim religious leader. Travellers should exercise caution in these areas and avoid places such as hotels, mosques, churches and markets that might be targets for retribution by various factions.
