Mount Aso in Japan erupts unexpectedly

Mount Aso, a volcano on Japan’s main southern island of Kyushu, has erupted unexpectedly today sending ash and smoke two kilometers into the air. About 100 tourists were transferred to a safe location. There are no reports of damage or injuries.

Advice

The Japan Meteorological Agency has raised the alert warning level to 3 (out of 5) which gives the advice “do not approach” the volcano. Mount Aso is a popular hiking spot. Travellers in the area should follow the advice of local authorities.
