Multiple states in Brazil are encountering large outbreaks of dengue fever

Five states, specifically Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, Acre and Tocantins, are experiencing major outbreaks of dengue fever. So far in 2013, a total of 204,000 cases have been reported across the country. This total is almost triple the number of cases reported in the same time period last year. There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
