Mumps virus is circulating in Perth, Australia

Health authorities have reported at least 30 cases of mumps, all of whom were infected locally and were older teenagers or adults aged in their 20s and 30s. There were 3 new cases last week. The fact that many of the cases did not become infected directly from another known case suggests that there may be many more undetected cases who are spreading the virus in the community. Mumps is preventable by vaccination, but outbreaks can occur anywhere in the world. Travellers should ensure that their childhood vaccinations are up-to-date prior to travelling.
