Murder rate in Mexico hits highest level in 20 years

In May, the murder rate in Mexico reached the highest level in 20 years. The deadliest state was Guerrero. In Sinaloa, the murder rate was the highest in six years.

In 2014, Mexico ranked third in the world in numbers of civilians killed in internal conflict, after Syria and Iraq. Bodies have been burned, buried and displayed in public places, such as hanging from bridges or beheaded and left at city Hall.

The Mexican government does make efforts to protect major tourist destinations like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta. Tourist areas have not had the levels of drug-related violence and crime as other areas.
