Myanmar declares state of emergency for Kokang region in eastern Shan state

Burma has declared a state of emergency in the Kokang region in the eastern Shan state, as well as a 90-day period of martial law. Since February 9, armed conflict has been ongoing between the Myanmar army and an ethnic Kokang group, the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army. Thousands of civilians have been forced to flee the area.
