National campaign against dengue fever begins in Sri Lanka

Due to dramatic increases in the number of people reported with dengue fever this year, health authorities have started a national campaign to control the disease and the mosquitoes that spread it. Approximately half of all infections have occurred in the eastern parts of the country, including the capital city. A total of 31 people have died due to dengue infections.

Advice For Travellers

The risk of exposure will vary from place to place and may be high in many localities.

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
