Nationwide hartel in Bangladesh February 8 through 11

An enforced nationwide hartal (general strike) has been called beginning Sunday, 8 Feb, at 6:00 am and ending on Wednesday at 6:00 pm. Travellers should exercise caution if traveling in Bangladesh.

Political violence has recently escalated, and at least 70 people have been killed and hundreds injured in the past month. Last evening in Gaibandha, an incendiary device thrown at a bus killed nine people, including two children. Today in Barisal district, three people died when a petrol bomb was thrown at a truck. Protesters have been disrupting transportation, blocking roads and rail lines. Opposition leaders have stated they will continue these actions until the government resigns.
