New cases of chikungunya and dengue in Mumbai, India

In the month of December alone, 50 people have been infected with dengue and 59 people with chikungunya in Mumbai. This is a large increase over last year’s report of just one person being infected with chikungunya in December 2015.

Officials are saying the continual rise in the diseases could be due to changes in weather as well as new strains of the virus.

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where these viruses are active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue or chikungunya infections do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
