New cases of extreme drug resistant tuberculosis reported in Maharashtra, India

Although strains of tuberculosis that are resistant to some anti-TB drugs have been reported in the past in this state, new cases of infection that are extremely resistant to all or nearly all drugs used to treat TB have been reported in and around Mumbai. The 2 most recent cases bring the total to 46 in the state (42 of whom occurred in Mumbai).

The average traveller is at low risk of becoming infectedwith TB during their travels since becoming infected usually requires prolongedexposure to an environment where there is someone with active tuberculosis.However, travellers can reduce their risk of exposure to TB by avoidingsituations where TB transmission is likely to occur, e.g., poorly ventilatedspaces with close contact with persons who are coughing and who have active TB.
