New cases of polio in Somalia and Kenya

Although there is some uncertainty regarding the exact number of new cases, it appears that, after the discovery of the first case of polio in Somalia since 2007, the number of cases in that country has increased to 9, in Banadir and Bay Regions. Large scale polio vaccination campaigns are scheduled to control the any further spread of the disease.

In Kenya, a total of 5 cases have been reported, all of whom are located in the Dadaab refugee camps near the Somalia border.

Travellers in any country that reports cases of polio can reduce their risk of exposure to polio virus by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including polio, are up-to-date prior to travelling.
