New cholera outbreaks in 4 African countries

New cholera outbreaks have been reported in the following African countries:

  • South Sudan - Outbreak declared in Rubkona Countie, Northern Liech State.
  • Zambia - 2 deaths and 27 cases in Kapiri Mposhi District.
  • Uganda - infected people recorded in Bibiya village in Elegu parish, Atiak sub-county in Amuru district.
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo - nationwide, 646 deaths and more than 22,000 cases registered, double the number from 2015. More than 5,500 children infected.

Advice

All travellers can minimize the risk of exposure to this disease. Strictly observe all food and water precautions in any area where there is cholera. If gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., vomiting and profuse watery diarrhoea) develop while visiting the affected area, travellers should seek medical care at once.
