New deadly cholera outbreak in Abeukota, Ogun State, Nigeria

A new outbreak of cholera in Abeukota, in Ogun State in southwest Nigeria has resulted in the deaths of 5 people. The total number of cases is not reported. Heavy rains are thought to have contributed to the mixing of sewage waste with drinking water supplies. Travellers to this area can reduce the risk of exposure to cholera by strictly observing all food and water precautions. If gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., vomiting and profuse watery diarrhoea) develop while visiting the affected area, travellers should seek medical care at once.
