New outbreak of polio possible in Kenya

Health officials have issued an alert for a new polio outbreak in the country after confirming a case of polio in a 3 year old child. Detection of a single case of polio usually means that there may be as many as 200 people or more that are infected with the virus but do not have any symptoms or illness. Nevertheless, they can act inadvertently as spreaders of the disease.

Travellers to this area should be aware that there is a risk of exposure to polio and ensure that all their childhood vaccinations, including polio, are up-to-date prior to travelling.

Visit our Health Library for more information on exposure to and the prevention of Polio.
