New outbreak of polio, this time in Madagascar

Three new cases of polio have been discovered by health authorities. The political crisis in Madagascar since 2009, along with fuel shortages for refrigerators to store vaccines has interrupted vaccination programmes across the country.

Travellers to this area should be aware that there is growing concern over failures of polio vaccination programs in various countries, resulting is sporadic reappearances of the disease. Travellers should ensure that their childhood vaccinations, including polio, are up-to-date prior to travelling.

Visit our Health Library for more information on exposure to and the prevention of Polio.
