New outbreak of typhoid fever on outskirts of Harare, Zimbabwe

There are reports of a new typhoid fever outbreak in Dzivarasekwa. Approximately 15-16 people are seeking treatment daily at the Beatrice Infectious Hospital during the past week. There are no reports of deaths yet. Inadequate supplies of potable water are being blamed for the outbreak. Travellers to this city can reduce their risk of exposure to typhoid fever by being cautious and avoiding consuming contaminated food or water. Vaccination against typhoid fever should be considered, especially if unsafe food cannot be avoided.
