New outbreak of Zika virus continues in Brazil

For the first time, the Zika virus has appeared in Brazil. There is an on-going outbreak that started in the state of Bahia in April. The outbreak has resulted in up to 3,500 cases of this infection, most of whom reside in the municipality of Camaçari. Authorities are concerned that it could spread widely since the mosquito that transmits it is commonly found throughout Brazil and other countries in the Americas.
