Nipah virus concerns public health officials in Bangladesh

There have only been a few sporadic cases of Nipah virus infection reported this year. However, most of the cases died. Up to the middle of 2013, there were 21 deaths out of 24 reported cases. These cases were from 13 different districts (Gaibandha, Jhinaidah, Kurigram, Kushtia, Magura, Manikganj, Mymensingh, Naogaon, Natore, Nilphamari, Pabna, Rajbari, and Rajshahi). The principal source of these infections is drinking raw date palm sap (Khejurer Rosh) that has been contaminated by virus infected bats. Traveller should definitely avoid consuming this beverage regardless of the situation.
