Nipah virus season in Bangladesh

Reports of 2 deaths due to Nipah virus in Naogaon are a reminder to travellers that this is the season for cases of Nipah virus infection to occur. The transmission season is usually January to April. Local residents collect date palm tree sap in large jars. Bats that carry this virus come to drink the sap, and defecate and urinate in the sap that becomes contaminated. Consuming raw (unpasteurized) data palm juice may result in a exposure to this highly lethal virus.
