Norovirus outbreak aboard Crown Princess docking in Galveston, Texas

About 96 of the 2,639 passengers and 6 of the 1,181 crew members on board the Crown Princess cruise ship contracted norovirus during a voyage from Venice to Galveston, Texas. Outbreaks of norovirus occur with some frequency in the confined spaces of a cruise ship. Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure to norovirus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid contaminated food and water. Travellers should be aware that this group of viruses may persist for some time on inanimate objects such as banisters, door knobs and other surfaces touched by ill persons. Good personal hygiene, especially hand washing, helps to reduce the risk of exposure and infection.
